These are some questions to ask before finishing your basement.

Answers to your finishing
basement questions

Remodeling? Don’t Waste Your Money!

Before remodeling or finishing your basement area, make sure you won’t have to rip it out later and start all over again. Why might you have to do this?

If the wood gets inundated with mold / mildew or dryrot. If the paneling warps. If water or moisture ruins the carpeting, drywall, or paneling.

How might that happen?
Excessive moisture in the air, or walls.
Water seepage.

What are some of the signs I should watch for?
Mold or mildew on the walls, on boxes, wood or clothing.
Musty smell in the basement or crawl space.
White spots on the walls
Any kind of water seepage
Smell or odor in the basement, or clothes that are stored there.
Cracked or bowed walls
Damage to items like furniture, cardboard boxes, etc.

Once you’ve checked these things out, it’s time to remodel! Here’s some general tips you might want to consider:

Make sure you have a plan:
Every good remodeling project begins with a thorough plan, so that you know what needs to be done, and in what order. This will help you keep costs to a minimum. It also will be necessary when applying for any permits that might be necessary to perform the work.

Vapor Barrier:
Experts recommend a vapor barrier between the wall and any materials you might be installing on the walls, like insulation or paneling. This reduces the moisture transfer between the concrete and the porous building materials, thereby reducing warping, problems. Once you do that, the only moisture left to worry about is from the basement air, or from seepage!

Use Good Quality Materials:
Inferior paneling will accumulate moisture faster than a good grade paneling. Moisture resistant drywall is a little more expensive, but designed to repel moisture much better than regular drywall. Don’t scrimp!

Consider ventilation:
Bathrooms have a fan in them, so that moisture that builds up from a bath or shower can be expelled. The same goes for a basement. Consider ventilation of the area to reduce buildup of moisture that can damage your remodeling work!
